Steve drives three hours inland from the California coast into the San Jacinto Mountains, where Sophea Khem—Soph to everyone who knows him—bakes bread for the farm stand down the road. Sophea left Cambodia at age two, grew up Cambodian in a Boston suburb, laid tile for ten years, and emerged as a designer in Los Angeles. He talks about the culture he gave up to fit in, and also the one he built instead.
