Thalente Biyela and Steve are at The Shred, the indoor skatepark in Cape Town he calls a sanctuary. Thalente traces a path from running away from home in Durban at six, to sleeping rough on the beachfront, to the North Beach skatepark that became his family, a surfer called Tammy who believed in him first, and a friendship with Tony Hawk. At thirty-three and eighteen months sober, he is chasing a place at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
