Highlights from the Episode
The Spark of Passion
Noa’s introduction to surfing began with a powerful moment of generosity. After a competition in Taiwan, Macy, a fellow surfer, gifted him a surfboard. This simple act ignited his love for the sport and set the course for his future in surfing. As Noa recalls, “That’s how Macy and I connected, and that’s when my bond with Vast began.”
The Leap to Hawaii
Despite excelling in Taiwan, Noa felt limited in his opportunities. Post-high school, he initially moved to California but found it wasn’t quite the right fit. The waves and warmth of Hawaii drew him in, where he also has family ties. Hawaii became more than just a place to surf—it became home. “Hawaii felt more like home because of the tropical vibes and having my grandmother here,” he shares.
Navigating the Surfing Community in Hawaii
Surfing in Hawaii comes with its own challenges, especially for someone who isn’t native to the area. Competing against locals who know the waves intimately is no easy feat. Yet, Noa’s respect for the community shines through. “The locals here are amazing. The sense of camaraderie and the family vibe is something special. It pushes me to be better every day.”
Balancing Education and Surfing
Noa emphasizes the challenges of juggling his surfing career while finishing his education. “It’s hard, but I’m determined to finish college here in Hawaii while pursuing my dream of making a living through surfing,” he notes. This blend of pragmatism and passion highlights his maturity and drive.
Family Support and Cultural Roots
Growing up in Taiwan with a traditional upbringing, Noa’s parents initially had reservations about his professional surfing ambitions. However, they became increasingly supportive as they saw his dedication. “My mom was more traditional, but she eventually became open-minded and super supportive. That shift meant everything to me.”
The Vast Connection
Noa’s relationship with Vast goes beyond sponsorship—it’s a bond rooted in shared values and community. He describes the brand as more than a business relationship, saying, “It feels like a family, something deeper than just being a brand ambassador.”
Facing Loneliness and Independence
Living away from his family for the first time has taught Noa valuable lessons in independence. Despite feeling lonely at times, he remains focused on his goals. “I keep busy with surfing, work, and cooking—another hobby of mine. It’s how I stay grounded.”
Looking Forward
Noa’s aspirations include competing more, finishing his education, and ideally staying in Hawaii. Though he dreams of joining the international surfing tour, he acknowledges the financial and logistical challenges. “Going on tour is the dream, but for now, I’m focusing on what I can control—finishing school and surfing as much as possible.”
