Vast Lives Podcast: Episode 7 - Kuhio Vellalos

In episode 07 of the Vast Lives Podcast, I start at the picturesque White Plains Beach on Oahu's southwest side, where the annual competition of the military surf classic is in full swing.

My guest, Kuhio Vellalos, in this episode is a talented water photographer and videographer. He shares his journey from being a young surfer to a passionate photographer. He talks reflectively of how the ocean lets him have fun: playtime, easing stress, and just contacting nature. Speaking of fun while surfing-sets the tone for the rest of our conversation.

He continues to tell me about being raised in Wahiawa, Oahu, and then again about growing up with the ocean. His battle to go through-a really bad injury to the neck-and how these experiences panned out in his perception of life and surfing.

We delve into his transition from competitive surfing into photography and discuss how he merged his love for the ocean with this newfound passion for capturing moments through the lens. He elaborates on early days in photography, influences of mentors, and the evolution of skills over the years.

The conversation shifts to the current landscape of surf photography, the current surge in video content, and the effect it's had on traditional still photography.

Other topics of interest involve discussion on sustainability and conscious living, where Kuhio reflects on his travel experiences and lessons learned around consumption and contentment. He underlines that these are values he would want to instill in his children-those of being grateful for something and valuing experience over material possessions.

Kuhio is stoked to be a part of VAST and the brand that embodies the spirit of surfing and brotherhood to working-class surfers. He emphasizes commitment to the building of respect and aloha within the surfing fraternity.
